WELCOME!

We are thrilled that you decided to learn more about our school!

The Brooklyn Brownstone School is committed to empowering tomorrow's community advocates to become catalyst of change. Students will learn to be independent critical thinkers and creative problem solvers, and work productively within a diverse group to improve their community.

In collaboration with families and community partners, we provide students with authentic learning experiences where they develop as scholars, advocates, artists, community and environmental stewards.  We prepare students to meet and exceed standards so they may enter and succeed in the high school, post-secondary schools, and careers of their choice.

HISTORY OF BEDFORD-STUYVESANT

Community School District 16 is one of three community school district in Brooklyn that cover Bedford-Stuyvesant, however we consider District 16 to be the heart of the neighborhood.

Street names in Bedford-Stuyvesant hold historical significance; streets such as Bainbridge, Chauncey, Decatur and MacDonough are named after naval heroes from several wars including the War of 1812.  History tells us that in the early 1800's two separate communities, Stuyvesant Heights and Bedford came together to form what we now know as Bedford-Stuyvesant or "Bed-Stuy."  It is a community with an eclectic touch and is historically known for its beautiful brownstones and townhouses.

Currently, Bedford-Stuyvesant is a community experiencing change.  As one walks through the community you can see and hear the "buzz" of renovation, new business, and changing demographics which provide a new backdrop for the growing community.  Prior to this revitalization, school registers were slowly declining. However, we sense that there will be a renewed demand for schools and community organizations to meet the needs of a growing population and a diverse community.
